I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. A lot of agents are going through a weird stretch right now, feeling stuck, unmotivated, or caught in a cycle of comparing themselves to what everyone else is posting.
And I wanted to share some thoughts because I think they matter.
My dad, a serial entrepreneur with over 25 businesses in his lifetime, told me something simple that stuck: happiness comes by you deciding to be happy.
After 24 years in real estate, I believe that. But choosing happiness is only part of it. You also have to embrace the boring days, stop comparing your journey to someone else’s highlight reel, and take an honest look at how you’re showing up every day.
I share the story of my 10-year coaching relationship with Kathy Anderson, including how I tried to quit multiple times before it became the most valuable part of my career.
I also walked through a framework I heard on a podcast about makers, takers, and breakers, and why asking yourself which one you are right now might be the most important question you can answer this week.
Whether you’re having the greatest year of your life or you feel like you’re taking steps backwards, this conversation is for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to “fall in love” with your real estate career?
Falling in love with your real estate career means progressing from initial excitement to long-term purpose and fulfillment. According to the Caul Group framework, agents move through stages like process, practice, patience, power, passion, and purpose—where true satisfaction comes after mastering the business and building stability.
Why do many real estate agents lose passion for their career?
Many agents lose passion because they misinterpret normal growth stages—like frustration or boredom—as failure. In reality, these phases are part of skill development and long-term success. Without patience and consistency, agents may quit before reaching confidence and fulfillment.
How can you stay motivated in a real estate career long-term?
You can stay motivated by understanding your current stage of growth, committing to consistent daily actions, and focusing on skill development. Motivation in real estate often follows mastery—not the other way around—so improving your abilities is key to enjoying the work.
When does passion develop in a real estate career?
Passion typically develops after an agent reaches a high level of competence and confidence. In the Caul Group model, passion comes after the “power” stage—once skills are proven and the business becomes more predictable and rewarding.
What is the key to building a fulfilling real estate career?
The key is staying committed long enough to move from early struggle to long-term purpose. Real estate success requires patience, consistency, and a clear understanding that fulfillment comes from mastery, stability, and eventually helping others grow in the industry.
